5 Maintenance Tips to Extend the Service Life of Mini Excavators

Compact mini excavators are valuable assets; whether you operate a single machine or manage a large rental fleet, rigorous maintenance is key to extending equipment lifespan, avoiding costly component failures, and maintaining high resale value. Neglecting routine inspections can lead to issues such as premature hydraulic pump wear, thrown tracks, or severe engine overheating.

To help customers worldwide keep their equipment performing at its best, the technical service team at Shandong Kuugao Machinery Co., Ltd. has compiled this five-step preventive maintenance guide.

1. Implement Daily Hydraulic System and Fluid Checks

The hydraulic system is the heart of the excavator; be sure to perform the following checks before starting the engine:

Check the oil level: Park the excavator on level ground, fully retract the boom and bucket, and observe the hydraulic oil level through the sight glass.

Check lines and fittings: Inspect hydraulic hoses for pinhole leaks, cracks, or signs of abrasion against the steel frame edges. Detecting worn hoses early helps prevent hydraulic fluid contamination and sudden pressure drops.

Fluid cleanliness: Replace the hydraulic return filter element and hydraulic oil according to the manufacturer's recommended intervals (typically every 250–500 operating hours), and ensure the use of clean fluid that meets the specified viscosity index.

2. Maintain Correct Rubber Track Tension and Undercarriage Cleaning

Rubber tracks provide excellent traction and protect established turf, but improper tensioning can significantly accelerate wear:

Too loose: Risk of the track slipping off the idler, leading to work stoppage and undercarriage damage.

Too tight: Excessive stress on travel motors, track rollers, and drive sprockets, causing premature bearing failure.

Daily cleaning: After each shift, use a pressure washer or shovel to remove accumulated mud, stones, and debris from the track frame; caked mud can damage track roller seals.

3. Grease All Pivot Pins and Bushings Daily

Metal-on-metal friction is the primary cause of looseness and play at the connection points of the excavator's dipper arm, boom, and bucket. Please apply high-quality lithium-based grease to all grease nipples every 8 to 10 hours of operation, paying special attention to high-friction areas such as the bucket pins and swing cylinder pivots.

4. Engine Air and Fuel Filter Maintenance

Mini excavators often operate in dusty environments; a clogged air filter restricts airflow, leading to incomplete combustion, reduced power, and excessive carbon buildup:

Inspect the main air filter daily and use low-pressure compressed air to blow off loose dust from the inside out.

Drain accumulated water from the fuel filtration system daily to protect the high-pressure diesel injection pump from water contamination.

5. Conduct Periodic Bolt and Torque Inspections

Mini excavators generate continuous vibration during operation; please regularly inspect and tighten fasteners—such as track drive sprocket bolts, slew bearing mounting bolts, and engine mounts—ensuring they meet specified torque requirements. Loose bolts can cause component misalignment and damage to expensive castings.

Kuugao Service Advantages: Every Kuugao mini excavator comes with a comprehensive maintenance manual, a dedicated tool kit, and clearly marked maintenance points, ensuring that routine servicing is both quick and error-free.
